Dr. Jafaru Abu is a Consultant Gynecological Oncology Surgeon with nearly three decades of experience in obstetrics, gynecology, and gynecological oncology. Prior to joining Burjeel Medical City, he held a senior consultant and leadership role at Nottingham University Hospitals, one of the United Kingdom’s largest teaching institutions. He completed his medical degree at the University of Benin, Nigeria, before undertaking all postgraduate training in the UK, where he achieved MRCOG and FRCOG and earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Sciences from the University of Leicester.

Dr. Abu completed advanced subspecialty training in gynecological oncology at the University Hospitals of Leicester and further enhanced his expertise through international fellowships in Australia. Appointed Consultant Gynecological Oncology Surgeon in 2006, he led major advancements in surgical cancer care, pioneering minimally invasive and robotic procedures for uterine, cervical, and ovarian cancers. He was among the first gynecologists in the UK to perform single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) and is widely recognized for expertise in complex cytoreductive surgery for advanced ovarian cancer.

Under his leadership, Nottingham’s gynecological oncology unit achieved accreditation as an Advanced Ovarian Cancer Cytoreductive Surgical Centre by the European Society of Gynecological Oncologists. He is also a dedicated educator, having founded the Nottingham Advanced Laparoscopic Training Course and serving as faculty at IRCAD in Strasbourg. In 2023, he received Special Professional Recognition from ESGO for his contributions to the field of gynecological oncology.
